A Stop at Melk

On our passage of the Danube, we crossed into Austria headed for the Wachau Valley. On our way, we arrived at the fabulous Benedictine Abbey at Melk in the morning, enjoying a tour of the grounds and house. Standing near the tour bus, I looked down upon the “Old Town” which dates back to the 13th century. Before that time, it was a fortified outpost occupied by the Romans.

I smiled as it reminded me of an exchange I had with a co-worker about history.

I like “American history.” He said.

I looked at him blankly.”America doesn’t really have a history bro. It’s only 200 years old. If you want history, you’ll have to at least go to where your ancestors came from. If you’d like to roll it back further, get on plane and head to Rome.”
