Barrington, Rhode Island, USA

The sun was just breaking when I set out for the small New England towns on the eastern side of Narragansett Bay.

Leaving Providence, I would eventually turn back after reaching Colt State Park in Bristol, Rhode Island. Foliage is still green in Southern Rhode Island, but the change of season is underway. If you cast your eye across the landscape, the yellows, reds and orange tinged leaves are signaling the end of summer.

I traveled along a popular cycling path that was once a railway corridor. The air has some bite in the early morning now, with today’s sunrise temperature at 41F/5C. Having come this way before, I knew I wanted to start before the world was awake, and the path populated with runners and more cyclists.

While it is sad to see summer fade, an extra layer of clothing and thicker socks equips me for fall, and the gifts it brings as well.

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.”
