Along the Burren

Burren National Park, County Clare, Ireland

Twice I’ve had the opportunity to visit the rugged landscape. The Burren, derived from the Irish ‘An Bhoireann’, translated to “a rocky place”. The karst landscape is the largest in Europe. We exited the bus, and walked along the limestone surface to the edge of the sea.

The stones and their fossilized, craggy surfaces extended to the horizon. Millions of years ago, the limestone sat at the bottom of a tropical sea. On the day of our visit, mother nature was in no mood to pamper us, and a brisk wind ran wild across the moonscape we traveled.

Though appearing uninhabitable, the Burren is home to many plant and animal species as the website for the Irish National Parks page will attest.

I’d enjoy visiting again, if assured i could get a day when Mother Nature was in a better mood!
